Bank cards in Denmark
In Denmark, we distinguish between cashcards, debit cards and credit cards.
A cashcard can normally only be used to withdraw cash from a cashpoint machine at your own bank. You cannot make payments with it. The banks supply cashcards free of charge.
A debit card is a card you can use to withdraw cash from cashpoints at different banks. A debit card can also be used to make payments. The amount is immediately deducted from your account. The most commonly issued debit card is Dankort. There is usually no charge made for using a Dankort but it can only be used in Denmark and in selected stores in and around Flensburg in Germany. If you want a debit card for use outside Denmark, we recommend a combined VISA/Dankort, VISA Electron or Maestro. Banks charge an annual debit card fee of up to DKK 150.
It is usually possible to overdraw on credit cards. The holder receives a monthly invoice which can be paid off immediately or in instalments. In order to qualify for a credit card in Denmark, you must be have a good credit rating, which means you have to be able to document that regular deposits will be credited to your account. The credit cards used most often in Denmark are MasterCard and VISA.

NemKonto Easy Account
Since 2005, the Danish State has operated a scheme encouraging all citizens who live and work in Denmark to open a so-called NemKonto Easy Account. Citizens are asked to specify one account, usually a salary account, to which the State can make payments, such as tax refunds, family allowances, etc. The idea is that the State can make payments cheaply and simply. All banks can register a salary account as a NemKonto.
